My favorite book by Seth Godin is Purple Cow. It’s a marketing book, an area where I struggle. So, it helped me grow my skills. More than that, it teaches a strategy about how to get your customer’s attention. Here are the lessons I’ve learned about how to be a purple cow.
Be Unusual
Purple cows draw your attention because they are remarkably different from what you are used to seeing. This can be in appearance, quality, customer service, variety, or value. Whichever aspect you choose to be different in be remarkably different.
Don’t be French Vanilla. Be buttered bacon pineapple.
Purple Cow 2.0
Cows don’t stay remarkable for long. They quickly fade into the crowd and you’ll need to find a new way to be remarkable. This could mean either taking your original remarkability to a new level or finding an entirely new aspect of your business to make remarkable.
Always be ready to change. It’s the only way to keep the attention you need for your business.
Be a Good Cow
Being remarkable for shenanigans that don’t add value for your customers is not helpful. You should be remarkable in a way that provides your customers more choice, more value, better service, or a better experience. You shouldn’t be remarkable for simply making the loudest noise possible.
Be good for your customers while being remarkable for them. Being loud or flashy doesn’t last long and doesn’t breed loyalty.
Find a Herd of Purple Cow Friends
Your creativity and remark-ability will grow proportionally to the creative and remarkable people you surround yourself with. Find those people. Work with them. Learn from them. Become more creative and more remarkable from your time with them.
A great group of Purple Cows to commune with is the Passive Income Press group on Facebook. Head over there now and sign up to join the herd.
